The Interpreted Life for Interpreters        ILI100
Duration: 3 to 4 hours

            You learn:

  1.                     How to discern, define, and declare your passions and your life’s                     purpose by applying specific interpreting processes
  2.                     How to set up a preliminary action plan to start fulfilling your life’s                     work (purpose)
  3.                     What is a “Life Purpose” · What are Passions
  4.                     Skills to maintain focus and attention on creating a life you love                     and then consciously living that life moment by moment
  5.                     How to use visualization techniques and exercises as interpreters in                     order to establish a palpable vision for turning dreams into                                         achievable goals

Religious Interpreting        Relig101A or Relig101B
Duration: 2 to 4 hours (Basic or Advanced instruction)

            You learn:

  1.                     Unique interpreting techniques related to religious interpreting.
  2.                     How to prepare for interpreting in specific religious settings.
  3.                     General religious signs
  4.                     Specific issues related to religious interpreting (teaming, sitting,                     standing, placement, theological references)
  5.                     How to study theological references from an interpreting
                        perspectives (hermeneutics)
  6.                     Language (biblical versus conversational)

Culturally-Specific Interpreting        CS101A or CS101B
Duration: 2 to 4 hours

            You learn:

  1.                     What is culture
  2.                     How effectively to navigate between cultures
  3.                     Culturally specific issues that arise while interpreting
  4.                     To interpret or not to interpret
  5.                     What exactly is a cultural “issue”

Interpreting African American Preaching        IAAP201
Duration: 4 to 6 hours

            You learn:

  1.                     What is African American Preaching
  2.                     Historical context.
  3.                     The content of African American Preaching
  4.                     Rhetorical devices
  5.                     How to anticipate rhetorical devices
  6.                     Common Black church idioms (and “sermonphones”)
  7.                     Common cultural aesthetic elements of the African American
                        church
  8.                     ASL poetic equivalents
  9.                     Classifier suggestion
  10.                     Common theological referents and biblical interpretation

Interpreting African American Sacred Music       
Duration: 2 to 6 hours (best at a minimum 4 hours)

            African American Spirituals and Hymns                   AASM201-SH

            You learn:

  1.                    What are spirituals
  2.                    What are hymns.
  3.                    How to deal with metaphor in music
  4.                    Specific characteristics of both spirituals and hymns
  5.                    Specific technique for interpreting both spirituals and hymns
  6.                    Theological backgrounds for common Spirituals and Hymns in the
                       African American church

            African American Gospel Music                   AASM201—GM

            You learn:

  1.            What is gospel music
  2.            How to deal with metaphor in music.
  3.            Specific characteristics of gospel music (what makes it
               gospel music)
  4.            Specific techniques for interpreting gospel music
  5.            Common Black church idioms present in gospel music
  6.            ASL poetic devices that work for interpreting gospel music
  7.            Visualization techniques and description exercises

Basic American Sign Language
Duration: 6 to 10 week classes (1 to 2 hours per week)

            You learn:

  1.            What is sign language
  2.            Deaf culture
  3.            Basic conversational phrases
  4.            Sign language alphabet
  5.            American Sign Language versus Signed English (the difference)
 

Interpreting in the African American Religious Setting
Duration: 6 months to 1 year (Courses are designed to be taken in tandem, two at a time)
