<< Meet the Interpreter >>

Antonio Goodwin is a Sign Language Interpreter Specialist, Speaker, Life Empowerment Coach, Author, and Professor. For almost 10 years he's been working with a diversity of people in advocacy and empowerment. During that time he's been a part of the deaf and hard of hearing community.

His background explains his breadth of knowledge and expertise.
He has a B.A. in music from one of the top colleges in the nation, Swarthmore College.
He attended Indiana University for his M.A. in Folklore, concentrating specifically on Ethnomusicology. His area of interest was African American sacred music and West African music.

While at Indiana University, he studied American Sign Language. He continued his studies when he moved to Nasville, TN.

In Nashville, he pursued his JD (law degree), and MDiv (Master of Divinity) in a joint degree program at Vanderbilt University Law School and Divinity School. His area of interest was criminal defense, social ethics and advocacy.

His collegial work has always been interdisciplinary and always involved cultural assessments as they dealt with prescriptive, normative, and descriptive approaches. Using this as a backdrop he developed a theoretical premise for interpreting in African American religious settings: Interpreting as Performance. While researching interpreter processes, Antonio and a co-researcher Myisha J. Blackman, published an article regarding this theoretical premise.

Antonio has taught American Sign Language in the community and on the college level. He is an adjunct professor at Chaffey College.

When you work with Antonio, you get all his knowledge, professionalism, and expertise as it relates to Deafness, deaf culture, culturally-specific settings, and a variety of aspects that bear on getting the message across.

He interprets business and professional conferences, video relay, medical appointments, legal settings, job interviews, staff meetings, concerts, church settings, weddings, and plays and musicals. He has taught American Sign Language on the college level for almost two years and has been teaching community classes for almost 8 years. He presents several workshops a year specifically regarding interpreting processing, music and performance interpreting, religious interpreting, culturally-specific interpreting, and a workshop designed specifically for interpreters to discern their passions and purpose.

With his law degree, Antonio understands the American with Disabilities Act and how to be in compliance with it as well as how to be protected by it.
